Filling Your Marriage with God’s Best

Do you have a “barely enough” marriage?

If so, would you like to have one that is “filled to the brim”?

Those metaphors come to life in John 2:1-11, which tells the story of Jesus’ miracle at the wedding at Cana. A man who was hosting a marriage celebration ran out of wine. At the urging of his mother, Jesus instructed the servants to fill six stone jars with water, each holding 20 to 30 gallons. Verse 7 says that the servants filled the pots “to the brim.”

Those three words offer a revealing insight into a godly approach to relationships. The servants had to work hard and trust that their efforts would be fruitful.

In first-century Palestine, filling the stone jars would have required numerous trips to a well. Back and forth, bucket after bucket. At any point, the servants could have decided, “It’s still water; this isn’t working,” and filled the jars only part way.

Instead, they had enough faith to continue obeying Jesus even when their faith didn’t appear to be working. As a result, not only did the wedding party receive a blessing from Jesus, but they enjoyed an abundance of it, to the brim.

A lot of couples have a “barely enough” mentality. They strive to connect just enough to keep their marriage together. They’re surviving, but not thriving.

There’s a better way. Every couple can invite Jesus into their marriage and act in faith toward filling their relationship to the brim with His blessings.

On our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Filling Your Marriage with God’s Best,” we’re airing a conversation between my wife Jean and I and Pastor Levi Lusko and his wife, Jennie, recorded at a Focus on the Family event. We discussed how grace, mutual submission, regular date-nights, and sexual intimacy are all key ingredients to a healthy and thriving marriage.

Listen to our discussion on your local radio station, online, on Apple Podcasts, via Google Podcasts, or on our free phone app.

And while you’re online, why not take a few moments to try our free Marriage Assessment online tool? It will help you quickly determine what’s working well in your relationship and identify areas where you may need some improvement.

Levi and Jennie Lusko founded Fresh Life Church in 2007, which has grown to include locations in Montana, Utah, Oregon, and Wyoming. Their book The Marriage Devotional: 52 Days to Strengthen the Soul of Your Marriage is available for a gift of any amount. And when you help Focus on the Family today with a gift, your donation will be doubled for twice the impact in helping others through this ministry. Our thanks to generous donors who’ve made that possible. Give us a call at 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459). Or click here for more information.
