Before Kyle Poulson’s adoptive mother passed away in 2016, she encouraged him to find his birth mother. He began that process in February of 2017 but because his adoption records were closed, Kyle ran into dead end after dead end. He thought he might never find his birth mother.
Nina Hendee, his birth mother, believed the same thing about Kyle decades earlier. She was 16 years old in 1971 when she became pregnant. Reared in a strong Christian family, her parents encouraged her “not to cover a mistake with a tragedy” by having an abortion. And so, Nina chose life, giving her baby up for adoption.
The adoption process back then was harsh. When Nina went into labor, doctors hung a drape across her body to prevent her from seeing the child. And after the baby was born, he was immediately whisked away.
However, the day before Nina was released from the hospital, a nurse – against all the rules – sneaked Kyle into Nina’s room and placed him in her arms. For 20 minutes, she got to hold him, love him, and pray over him.
Amazingly, it would be nearly 50 years before they would reconnect in a reunion orchestrated by God.
On our Focus on the Family Broadcast “How God Reunited a Birth Mom and Her Son,” Nina Hendee and Kyle Poulson are with us to share their remarkable story of Nina’s courageous decision to rescue her baby from abortion.
Their journey is a profound reminder of how God answers prayer – even when we don’t know who or what people are praying for us. Listen on your local radio station, online, on Apple Podcasts, via Google Podcasts, or take us with you on our free phone app.
We’re so grateful for the Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe vs. Wade in the United States. But abortion is still very prevalent in the U.S. and around the world, so we need to stay committed to showing God’s love to women and their babies, giving them hope and the resources they need to choose life like Nina did.
Nina and her husband, Edd, are the owners and operators of the Taste of Texas restaurant in Houston. Kyle Poulson is a commercial real estate advisor and investor for Trans Western in the Fort Worth, Texas area. He also serves as a board member and coach for a number of local organizations.

If you’d like to play a role in supporting life, one of the best things you can do is participate in our Option Ultrasound program. Abortion clinics are interested in abortion. Pregnancy resource centers minister to everyone involved: the woman, the man, the baby – the whole family.
Focus supports these centers through our Option Ultrasound program, which provides grants for sonogram training and technology. To date, more than 800 ultrasound machines have been placed around the country, and nearly 460,000 babies have been saved.
We’re working hard to raise that number to one million babies saved sometime in the near future. With that in mind, I’d like to extend an invitation for you to become a special partner with us through our monthly “Friends of Focus on the Family” program. What’s amazing is that it only takes $60 to save a baby’s life by providing ultrasound machines and additional resources.
