Understanding the Spiritual Impact of Healthy Living

Is pursuing a healthy lifestyle something we can actually enjoy?

Author Gary Thomas says, “Yes.”

I trust Gary, but I’m skeptical. If you’re anything like me, your lazy side frequently wins out over your desire to take health and fitness seriously. We know our health is important, but it’s hard to be consistent.

I’m talking with Gary on Focus on the Family with Jim Daly about pursuing and maintaining strong, physical health, so we can be fit and effective in serving God’s kingdom.

Gary is passionate about good health. In fact, he’s competed in fourteen marathons! Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Great. A marathon runner is going to tell me why I need to start running to get in shape.” But let me set your mind at ease. Gary hasn’t always been the paragon of good health. He admits to having an unhealthy relationship with food for much of his adult life. A “slave to hunger,” as he describes it. As his metabolism started slowing down in his 30s, he realized he needed to be careful about his food choices. Over the years, he’s learned tricks for keeping those choices as practical and simple as possible.

Gary also believes that there’s more to overall good health than just physical diet and exercise. He stresses the connection between our physical bodies and our spiritual souls as well. He says, “All the proper doctrine in the world can’t save us from eating away our sensitivity to God’s presence or throwing away years of potential ministry if we wreck our heart’s physical home.”

Gary explains why taking care of our bodies is an act of discipleship and worship on your local radio station, online, on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or take us with you on our free phone app.

Gary is currently on the pastoral teaching team at Cherry Hills Community Church in Highlands Ranch, Colorado. His book Every Body Matters: Strengthening Your Body to Strengthen Your Soul is available for a gift of any amount. For more information, click here or call 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).
