Four decades and 50 million innocent lives later, those of us who support the protection of the unborn were heartened to hear of the upcoming vote in the House of Representatives that would have banned abortion after 20 weeks. But now we’ve learned the bill has been pulled by the GOP leadership over some of the legislation’s language. Rather than have a public fight on the floor of the House, leadership has chosen to cancel the vote altogether.
We’re obviously disheartened and disappointed by this development.
Politics is not a spectator sport, though. And so despite this setback, I would encourage those who share a passion for the most vulnerable, to please contact your legislator. Urge him or her to put pressure on the leadership to work this out.
The right to life is the most foundational and fundamental of all human principles. In fact, it’s a window on the soul of a country’s people and their priorities. And so as we pause to commemorate all those lost to abortion this Jan. 22, let us pray for a day when the scourge of abortion will be viewed with the same heartache and revulsion as that of racism.
It is time for boldness. It is time for the House to figure this out and to pass this bill.
