Single Mom of Boys

Raising boys presents unique challenges for single mothers.

If you’re parenting on your own, one of the most important things you can do is surround yourself with a supportive community. Family. Close friends. Even people you know from work or church. The main thing is don’t go it alone. You need people who will come alongside you when the going gets tough.

You need support, but so does your son. I know you’re working hard to be your son’s source of strength, but he needs a male figure in his life who can set a good example of what it means to be a man. Ask a family member or a friend you trust if they’ll spend time with your son and mentor him.

I also recommend you take advantage of books and other resources that will help you navigate single parenting. You and your son are both in store for a lot of changes as he matures and develops. There is great information out there that can help you avoid some of the potholes. Focus on the Family has an online store that offers helpful digital and print resources in the areas of marriage, parenting, faith, and issues related to many other life challenges.

Mom, I know you’re working hard, and I applaud your commitment to your son. Many days, it’s a thankless job. Stay strong and believe that your dedication and hard work is sowing seeds that will soon blossom.

If you’re a single mom and could use someone to talk to, give one of our counselors here at Focus on the Family a call. The number is 1-800-A-FAMIILY.
