As I witness the chaos that so often erupts in our culture, there’s one word I don’t usually hear people use to describe what’s happening: disillusionment.
I believe disillusionment is at the heart of much of the problems plaguing our country: from mass shootings to drug and alcohol abuse to losing hope so completely that suicide seems the only option.
America was once a nation of rugged pioneers. Now, we seem to struggle to handle life’s harsh realities. We’ve grown so accustomed to luxury and convenience that when adversity comes, we grow disillusioned and crumble under the pressure.
Perhaps that’s because the greatest antidote to disillusionment – faith – is under assault in our culture. As our society strips itself of belief in God, we’re simultaneously stripping our lives of ultimate meaning and purpose. And when meaning and purpose vanish, disillusionment rushes in to fill the vacuum.
To find peace in troubling times, we must anchor ourselves in something that’s greater than our suffering, something that can redeem our pain and bring new life out of broken circumstances. Jesus Christ gives us reason to hope, the courage to believe, and the strength to face our adversity head on.
To learn more about Jesus, you be interested in a free online booklet we’ve written called, “Coming Home: An Invitation to Join God’s Family,” which explains what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.
