There’s an old saying that if a hammer is the only tool you own, everything will look like a nail. That’s why a well-rounded toolbox also contains screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches of all sizes. Each tool is designed to solve a specific problem.
With that in mind, how many tools are in your parenting toolbox? There isn’t one tool to rule them all. Some moms and dads rely on the same emotion and parenting techniques for every situation – anger, overly strict rules, permissiveness, etc. But effective parenting employs the right tool at the right moment to best develop your child’s behavior and maturity.
Dr. Randy Schroeder, author of the book, Simple Habits for Effective Parenting, encourages parents to keep in mind what he calls the “foundational Rs” of parenting:
- Relationship – Build trust with your child through action first, words second. Your number-one goal is to do whatever it takes to ensure that your relationship is unbreakable.
- Routines – Regular parent-child routines develop a close bond. Eat meals together. Greet your child with a smile and hug. Pray together. Tuck them in at night.
- Responsibilities – Teach your children self-discipline through age-appropriate responsibilities. When they help around the house, they not only contribute to the family’s good, but they strengthen their self-worth and self-confidence.
- Rules – Children need rules and boundaries to feel secure. Give them freedom within the rules that create opportunities to make responsible decisions.
