Yesterday’s vote in the United States Senate on the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act marked a new and horrific low in American politics.
The measure, which would have guaranteed medical care for children born alive after an attempted abortion, needed 60 votes for passage.
It received 53.
Shockingly, 44 Democrats opposed the legislation.
Think about that.
Nearly half of the United States Senate voted to allow the killing of infant children.
Politics is intrinsically contentious. Bitter partisan battles have become the norm. But what type of country have we become that so many women and men support the cold-blooded murder of innocent babies – even those already born?
Just a few weeks ago, the nation reeled in shock and horror when Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, a pediatric neurologist, voiced support for infanticide. It almost seemed too hard to believe. Even those who claim to support a woman’s right to abortion expressed outrage. Something of a national conversation ensued about late-term abortion and even death after birth, culminating with Senator Ben Sasse (R-NE) proposing legislation to protect a born baby’s right to life.
Senator Sasse joined me on the Focus radio program to discuss it. You can hear our conversation here.
That such legislation is even necessary illustrates the degree of depravity present in the pro-abortion lobby. The very same people who protect seals and the eggs of bald eagles seem to have no problem with a doctor letting fully formed and breathing babies die on a cold table.
Senator Sasse’s first attempt to gain passage of the bill was blocked by Senator Patty Murray (D-WA). Monday’s second defeat came after a concerted pro-life effort to convince Democrat senators to vote for the bill came up short.
Let me assure you that we will not rest until pre- and newborn babies are guaranteed their God-given right to life!
This ongoing debate is precisely what precipitated Focus on the Family to recently issue our Declaration For Life – a rigorous and inspired statement that over 60,000 people have signed thus far and which we plan to present to both the White House and leaders of Congress later this spring. If you haven’t yet signed the document, I would urge you to do so today. Add your name to the roll of those standing up and speaking out for those who have no voice.
I’d also like to invite you to join us on Saturday, May 4th, in New York City for ALIVE FROM NEW YORK – Focus on the Family’s largest pro-life event in our history. The highlight of our celebration of life in Times Square will be a live 4D ultrasound broadcast on several jumbotrons in the middle of Manhattan. There will also be live music and inspired speakers, all of whom will be making an unequivocal case for life.
The support for killing newborn children is not only appalling but untenable, a cold and coarse position that elicits memories of totalitarian regimes and cold-blooded murderers whom history records as being wicked, inhumane tyrants. This is not the United States of America – or is it?
Now is not the time to remain silent. Now is the time to stand up and speak out.
If you are frustrated and exasperated over these recent events, I would invite you to sign the Declaration for Life and consider joining us in New York City’s Times Square on May 4th. As we take these next steps, I am reminded of that great observation from Thomas Jefferson, who once reflected, “I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.”
Indeed, it was the apostle Paul who wrote, “Do not be deceived; God is not mocked: for whatever one sows, that will he also reap” (Galatians 6:7).
Thank you for joining us!
