Many people keep on the lookout for big opportunities that will change their lives. But often it’s the small, seemingly insignificant moments that have the greatest impact.
Author Cecil Murphy tells how a broken heel unexpectedly led to a new life for a woman named Betty. Going about her business one day, she broke the heel of her shoe as she stepped into the street. When she sat on the curb to nurse her ankle, she noticed a shoe store for the first time, even though she must have walked by it dozens of times. She went inside and, while waiting for repairs, a man she recognized entered the store. They struck up a conversation, which eventually led to a relationship, and, a short while after that, marriage.
Someone once said, “Life is what happens while we’re busy making other plans.” Betty wasn’t looking for someone to marry that day. But life interrupted her on her way to somewhere else. A simple, unexpected event opened the door for Betty’s whole life to change.
How often do we overlook life’s small moments? They’re meaningless, we think – too insignificant to matter. But if we keep ourselves open to embracing moments we haven’t planned for, we may find life blossoming in ways we couldn’t have anticipated.
Slow down and be attentive to life. Opportunities might be right there waiting for you to reach out and take hold.
