New York state has recently signed into law a barbaric piece of legislation which would allow a woman to abort her child at any point during pregnancy, and specifically during the third trimester. The law only requires that the mother’s “health” is at risk. The term “health” is so broad that it could mean anything from medical, physical, psychological to financial issues.
Shockingly, there were celebrations throughout the state in response to the passing of this legislation, with lawmakers cheering wildly. Governor Andrew Cuomo even required that the One World Trade Center’s 408-ft spire and other New York landmarks be bathed in pink light to commemorate this so-called “great achievement.”
How distasteful that the legalization of such a radical pro-abortion law was celebrated at the site of the largest terrorist attack in United States history. The memorial reflecting pools that mark the footprints of the World Trade Center towers contain the names of every person lost on that terrible day. In addition to the nearly 3,000 names etched on the memorials, there are 11 unborn children identified who lost their lives along with their mothers.
How is it that a state that can recognize and mourn the lives of preborn babies lost to terrorism can turn around and celebrate the murder of those same babies in the womb?
The legislation also defined life as only being post-birth, so pre-born children killed by a drunk driver or some other violent act will no longer be counted.
As a society, we sometimes like to think of ourselves as more “evolved” than previous generations, but that’s not the case. The cycle of sin never stops. When the people of Judah began sacrificing their children in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, the prophet Jeremiah recorded God’s strong rebuke:
“For the sons of Judah have done evil in my sight, declares the Lord. They have set their detestable things in the house that is called by my name to defile it. And they have built in the high places of Topheth, which is in the Valley of Son of the Hinnom, to burn their sons and daughters in the fire, which I did not command, nor did it come into my mind. Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when it will no more be called Topheth, or the Valley of the Son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter … And I will silence in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness.” (Jeremiah 7:30-34a, ESV)
God help those legislators and their supporters who rejoiced as they enabled the sacrifice of even full-term babies at the altar of convenience.
Those of us at Focus on the Family are committed to doing what we can to address this tragic development. For the last few days we’ve been on the phone with our pro-life friends in the Empire State. Our goal is to redouble our efforts and provide additional ultrasound technology machines to the area along with a variety of other resources. In the coming days, you’ll be hearing from us on how you can be a part of this sweeping effort to save children in New York.
