Pro-life activist Paul Vaughn’s recent settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice is a win for life, justice and the rule of law.
Vaughn, a Christian father of now 11 children, was arrested in 2022 in an early morning raid by heavily armed FBI agents at the family’s Tennessee farmhouse. He was hauled away in front of his frightened wife and their seven children (including an 18-month-old).
Vaughn and 10 others were charged with violating the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act for peacefully protesting at an abortion clinic in Nashville, where the activists prayed and sang worship songs. Vaughn faced up to 11 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
After the Dobbs decision, the Biden administration fiercely targeted dozens of peaceful pro-life supporters while essentially turning a blind eye to roughly 400 violent attacks on churches and pregnancy resource centers that were vandalized and firebombed.
On January 23, 2025, President Trump thankfully pardoned Vaughn and 22 other pro-life activists, righting a real wrong, and reminding us that elections have consequences.
“Obviously, money doesn’t equate justice, and there’s not a true sense of justice in the settlement,” Vaughn told Fox News. “But it is an acknowledgment of wrong, and it is something to help make up for the time lost.”
Scripture urges us to pray for those in authority over us “that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way” (1 Timothy 2:1-2). Please join me in prayer for President Trump and his administration as they continue to navigate the trying times our nation faces.
Additionally, Vaughn’s saga reminds us of the seemingly inverted nature of the Gospel. As Jesus taught in the Beatitudes, “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10). In God’s economy, those who are persecuted gain a great heavenly reward.
Paul Vaughn’s story should inspire us all to redouble our efforts in the cause for life. At Focus on the Family, we happily stand shoulder-to-shoulder with thousands of pregnancy resource centers and pro-life activists to save babies and their moms from the tragedy of abortion.
I’m grateful for Paul Vaughn’s brave pro-life witness and hope you’ll join me in prayer for him and his family.
