With the national unemployment rate hitting 10.2%, the highest level in 26 years, it’s the rare individual who willingly quits a job without having another to take its place. But Abby Johnson said she really had no choice. And Abby Johnson didn’t have a run-of-the-mill job, either.
Abby is 29 years old and lives in Bryan, Texas. After she left the organization she had worked at for nine years, her employer filed what’s called a “restraining order of disclosure” against her, suspicious that she had absconded with confidential files. She has vehemently denied the accusation.
Sound suspicious?
By all accounts, Abby was a model employee who came aboard the clinic as a volunteer, gained the trust of her superiors and rose through the ranks to claim the title of “Director.” But something happened one day that nearly took her breath away. In fact, what she saw was something she had never seen before. The incident would wind up turning her life upside down.
Abby Johnson recently resigned her position as Director of a Planned Parenthood—all because she saw an ultrasound image of a baby during an abortion procedure.
“I had never seen an abortion happen on an ultrasound,” she said. “My job during the procedure was to hold the probe on the woman’s abdomen. I could see the whole profile of the baby 13 weeks head to foot. I could see the whole side profile. I could see the probe. I could see the baby try to move away from the probe.”
The ghastly site struck her in a profound and moving way.
“I just thought, ‘What am I doing?'” she recalled, “And then I thought, ‘Never again.'”
Convicted and determined, Johnson resigned her position and signed up to work for Bryan’s Coalition for Life.
“I’m not doing this to judge anyone,” she said. “My goodness, I have participated in the abortion industry for eight years. I’m just here as a resource and telling my story . . . and maybe somebody will be touched by it.”
Thank you, Abby, for your willingness to publicly announce and promote your change of heart.
Since 2004, Focus on the Family’s Option Ultrasound has helped place more than 400 ultrasound machines in various facilities all across America. Our research reveals that when abortion minded women view the ultrasound image of their baby, they are much more likely to carry the baby to term. In fact, it’s been estimated that since 2004, more than 73,000 babies have been saved thanks to the presence of Focus on the Family-sponsored ultrasound machines!
“An ultrasound can help a woman make a more informed decision consistent with her own values and priorities,” said Yvette Maher, vice president of Focus on the Family’s Sanctity of Human Life Division. “Ultrasound services also help a woman understand her body, her pregnancy and her baby’s development, and, most importantly, a woman has the opportunity to see for herself what the abortionist likely will not disclose—her preborn baby.”
