Walking with God Through Trials

We all think we have a strong faith. Then, our world gets rocked.

An adverse diagnosis.

A child who loses their way.

A spouse who walks away.

The storms of life leave us shaken and wondering if God is really there.

Psalm 34:18 assures us that He is: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

What a comfort that is!

It’s a truth that has anchored author Michelle Cushatt’s life through many trials and difficulties. Her first marriage ended in divorce, leaving her a single mom with a young son. Her second marriage struggled to overcome the challenges of building a stepfamily while she and her husband adopted three traumatized children from her extended family. It was during this time that she was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue – three times.

Yet, through all of this, Jesus proved faithful.

Michelle encourages people to develop a strong foundation of faith to weather life’s storms through ten spiritual practices that solidified her faith:

  1. Lament.
  2. Worship.
  3. Humility.
  4. Relinquishment.
  5. Contentment.
  6. Shalom.
  7. Forgiveness.
  8. Perspective.
  9. Connection.
  10. Waiting.

Michelle Cushatt is with us on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Walking with God Through Trials” to help you build a faith that will sustain you through the difficult seasons of life. Listen on your local radio station, online, on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, via Google Podcasts, or take us with you on our free phone app.

In the meantime, if you’re not sure where to start on the journey of faith, you may be interested in a free online booklet we’ve written called, “Coming Home: An Invitation to Join God’s Family,” which explains what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

And if you’re grasping at the fringes of a faith that has faded, we have a terrific team who will listen, pray with you, and get you on a path toward healing and hope. If needed, you can set up an initial consultation with one of our caring, Christian counselors. Call us, leave your name and number, and they’ll get back to you just as soon as possible. The number during business hours is 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).

Before I close, I’d like to extend an invitation for you to become a special partner with us through our monthly “Friends of Focus on the Family” program. When you do, I’ll send you a copy of Michele Cushatt’s book A Faith That Will Not Fail: 10 Practices to Build Up Your Faith When Your World Is Falling Apart as a way of saying thank you for touching others with the love of Christ. You’ll also receive member-exclusive benefits. To make your pledge, or for more information, click here or call 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).
