The abortion debate is framed in many ways. And almost all of them avoid the central question: Who counts as one of us?
Are the preborn alive or not? Are they living human beings or not? In most cases, pro-abortion factions avoid addressing those questions. They frame the discussion around choice, individual rights, and the safety of medical procedures. But no one answers that central question.
We’re answering today on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Who Counts as One of Us?” with our guest Scott Klusendorf. Listen on your local radio station, online, on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or on our free phone app.
Scott is the president of Life Training Institute, which equips people with the knowledge and conviction necessary to make a case for life that changes hearts and minds. He refutes the claim by pro-abortion groups that the pre-born aren’t human until they are conscious or self-aware.
He asks, “If self-awareness – not my human nature – is what gives me value as a person, do those with more self-awareness have a greater right to life than those with less? If so, that definition inherently disqualifies newborns, the mentally challenged, and many of our elderly.”
Who counts as one of us? Scott uses the acronym SLED to teach people four crucial elements to the abortion debate:
- Size
- Level of development
- Environment
- Degree of dependency
Our conversation was based on Scott’s book called The Case for Life: Equipping Christians to Engage the Culture. I’d like to offer you a copy for a gift of any amount.
I’d also like to extend an invitation for you to become a special partner with us through our monthly “Friends of Focus on the Family” program. What’s amazing is that it only takes $60 to save a baby’s life by providing ultrasound machines and additional resources. Visit our website for more information.
The slogan for Focus on the Family’s pro-life event this year is “See Life 2020”! The online event will kick off on September 26th featuring interviews, special music, and of course an ultrasound of a preborn baby. You can help get the word out by pointing your friends and family to https://www.focusonthefamily.com/see-life/ where they can sign the pledge to #LoveEveryHeartbeat. We’re praying for a reawakening to the sanctity of every human life in our nation!
And if you’re struggling in any way as a result of abortion, remember that we have caring Christian counselors on staff, and it would be their privilege to offer you a free consultation. Call us, leave your name and number, and they’ll get back with you just as soon as possible. The number during business hours is 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).
