How to Balance a Busy Family Life

Multigenerational family in kitchen

Life just keeps moving faster and faster for all of us.

With jobs and kids and all that goes into running a household, daily life can be difficult to balance.

Fortunately, there are a couple of ways to make that task a little easier.

The first idea comes from my friend and former Focus board member, Al Mohler. Like most of us, he leads a busy life. And it was busy in the early years of his family as well. His hours at the office were hectic, he travelled frequently, and he even had to work at home from time to time.

Not surprisingly, there were times he struggled to give his wife and kids his full attention. In fact, it didn’t take long for he and his wife to realize that striking a perfect balance between work and home life every single day sometimes just wasn’t possible.

That’s when he implemented a strategy for his family you might find helpful for yours.

Instead of trying to balance every twenty-four hours, they made the decision to balance blocks of time instead.

Depending on your schedule, that may be one week or several. Whatever you choose, the idea is to strike a balance across that timeframe. If, for example, you’re out of town for a week, you may not be able to interact with your family over the course of those days as fully as if you were home. That’s okay. Just make sure that, upon your return, you don’t slip right back into your normal workweek grind. Instead, refocus your attention toward your family and engage with them first.

Give it a try. I hope this idea will help you create some balance in your life. Or maybe you have some ideas of your own that have proven beneficial. If so, I’d love to hear about them.
