You may feel like author Natasha Crain when she gave her four-year-old son his first swimming lesson. She told him to hold his breath, but when she swished him through the water, he came up choking and crying.
She encouraged him to hold his breath again, but he came up gurgling a second time, too. The third time Natasha encouraged her son to hold his breath, he looked at her and asked, “Mommy, what does breath mean?”
