Broadcast of the Year

I have some good news for you.

Our broadcast team is back in the office today after spending the last several days in Nashville, Tenn., for the annual National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) Convention. It’s always a fast-paced and fruitful time of seeing old friends and meeting new ones who share our passion for communicating timeless biblical truths through radio, television, the Internet and ever-growing world of mobile apps.

NRBAward.jpgThis year’s NRB was a little-extra special, though, as the Focus on the Family daily broadcast was named Radio Program of the Year in an awards ceremony yesterday.

We’re honored to receive this award from our peers not because it indicates we’re anything special, but because it indicates listener’s lives are being touched by and for Christ. For me and my co-hosts, Dr. Juli Slattery and John Fuller, this is a humbling affirmation of how much our broadcast guests help families thrive in their marriages, their parenting and their faith. It’s evidence that the Word of God, and the wisdom of His principles we get to share every day, most definitely do not come back void.

NRB’s criteria for Radio Program of the Year is a show “that impacts the listener by being compelling, relevant, informative, personable, and entertaining, while demonstrating an authentic Christian faith.” We pray we live up to that high standard. Our goal is to give the audience practical, biblical insights they can live out in their day-to-day lives. We want to educate them, and inspire them, motivate them to be the best spouses, parents and citizens they can be.

About three-quarters of the shows aired during 2011 centered on marriage and parenting topics, and featured such authors and experts as Dr. Gary Chapman, Dr. Kevin Leman, Dr. Henry Cloud, Dr. John Townsend, Lysa TerKeurst, Bill and Pam Farrel, and Focus on the Family’s own executive director for marriage, Greg Smalley.

Among the more memorable shows of the last 12 months were “Helping Your Kids Grab Hold of Their Faith” (with guests Lee Strobel and Alison Morrow), “Surviving the Strong-Willed Child” (Cynthia Tobias), “Solid Advice for the Single-Parent Home” (Elsa Kok Colopy), “Rekindling Romance in Your Marriage” (Dr. David Clarke), “Securing Financial Peace for Your Family” (Dave Ramsey), “Moving Beyond Fear and Worry” (Max Lucado), “His and Her Brains: The Humorous Side of Marriage” (Mark Gungor), “The Challenges of Parenting Teens” (Dr. Robert Barnes), “Addressing Heartache in Marriage” (Dr. Dan Allender), and “Sound Advice for Working Moms” (Sabrina O’Malone).

We’re constantly looking for fresh and innovative ways to bring God’s timeless truths, and the testimonies of His people, to you who listen. I’m proud of the great work our broadcast team, a talented group of about 20 dedicated professionals, does to bless families worldwide. I wish you could meet each one of them.  In the meantime, I hope you’ll keep tuning in and giving us feedback on how to make the show even more enjoyable and helpful!
