Cherish Your Wife

Couple dancing in the kitchen

They say the eyes are a window to the soul.

If so, husbands, what are your wife’s eyes telling you? Are they alive and vibrant? Or are they tired and withdrawn?

The difference could lie in how she sees herself in your eyes. Does she see a reflection of herself as described in Scripture? Genesis 2:18 says, “Then the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.’”

The Hebrew word for “helper” conveys the idea of a “completer.” Far from being subservient or inferior to their husbands, God has designed wives to be equal companions.

But what about 1 Peter 3:7 which says, “Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel”?

Weaker? Doesn’t that imply subservience or inferiority? The Greek word translated as “weaker” has a richer meaning than readers might first assume. That same word is used elsewhere to describe valuable artwork. It portrays a certain delicate quality that is at the same time beautiful and priceless.

Is that how you see your wife? Do her eyes sparkle when she looks at you because she knows how valuable she is to you?

We’re airing an inspiring message by Dr. Walt Larimore on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Cherish Your Wife.” Dr. Larimore formerly served as the vice president of Medical Outreach here at Focus. He’s a respected physician, author, and speaker. Perhaps most importantly, he’s been married to his wife, Barbara, for over 30 years.

Dr. Larimore encourages husbands to believe that cherishing their wives for the priceless works of art that they are will bring their hearts to life.

You’ll see it in her eyes because she’ll see it in yours.
