Finding God’s Healing for Sexual Brokenness

You don’t have to be a Christian or a social scientist to recognize the terrible consequences of mismanaged sexuality.

For 50 years, the sexual revolution has popularized casual sex, but it has also produced sexual casualties. Like Sy Rogers. He was 6 years old when he was repeatedly molested by an adult male. After his mom was killed in a drunk driving accident, his father sent him to live with female relatives. The feminine mannerisms he developed led to bullying from boys who told him that he was gay. As a teenager, he became sexually promiscuous with other males and pursued a sex change operation.

He wanted to feel loved and connected more anything, but he didn’t believe he could measure up to anyone’s standards, especially God’s. God may have loved other people, but He didn’t love Sy.

Then, as Sy says, “My eyes were open to God in a new way, where He was no longer a code of ethics to debate. He was no longer some philosophical point of view to ponder with the chattering classes at university over a cup of coffee. He now became a real, live person, not another option on the spiritual buffet, but a real, live presence. And in light of that, how was I going to live my life?”

And so began a journey that not only required Sy to crucify his flesh but to swim against the tide of popular culture. He didn’t accept that path out of a desire to pursue religious ritual or to champion certain moral standards. He accepted it because of a transforming encounter with Jesus Christ.

Sy Rogers is with us on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Finding God’s Healing for Sexual Brokenness” to tell his story. Along the way, he’ll encourage you to pursue sexual purity through a close relationship with your Heavenly Father. He’ll also share why he believes it is possible to overcome homosexual attractions and gender confusion. He’s lived it.

Sy’s talk was recorded at the 2019 Devoted Conference at Wave Church in Virginia Beach. This program isn’t graphic, but it’s probably not suitable for younger children. Please use your discretion and occupy your kids elsewhere, or listen later on your local radio station, online, on iTunes, via Podcast, or on our free phone app.

Sy served for many years as a teaching pastor with LIFE Church in Auckland, New Zealand.  Sadly, he died just last year at the age of 63 from kidney cancer. Our hearts go out to his family.

Before I close, I’d like to extend an invitation for you to become a special partner with us through our monthly “Friends of Focus on the Family” program. When you do, I’ll send you a copy of this broadcast as a way of saying thank you for touching others with the love of Christ. You’ll also receive member-exclusive benefits. To make your pledge, or for more information, visit our website or call 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).
