We congratulate Justice Anthony Kennedy on the announcement of his retirement, and note with appreciation his 30 years of service to the country as Associate Justice, and the nearly 13 years prior to that serving on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
After becoming Focus’ President, I had the privilege of meeting with Justice Kennedy. Although we occasionally differed on the issues, sometimes strongly so, when we met I found him to be quite personable and was impressed with his dedication to the Court and to his duties there. Most recently, his opinions on two cases regarding the exercise of faith and expression, Masterpiece Cakeshop and NIFLA, his well-worded contributions to the decisions were well received.
The President has already begun shaping the federal court system for generations to come. With the appointments of Justice Neil Gorsuch and over 21 appellate judges, the President has proved that he is committed to selecting justices who hold the Constitution and rule of law in the highest regard. Looking forward, we’re confident that President Trump will nominate a justice who will adhere to the text and original understanding of the Constitution in the mold of the late Justice Antonin Scalia.
