Hugh Hefner has died. How does his view of sex compare to God’s?

You may have heard that the founder of Playboy magazine, Hugh Hefner, died last night at the age of 91. I want to share with you my statement to the media on his passing:

“The death of Hugh Hefner has elicited tributes of many kinds, including that he was a pioneer who liberated the sexual frustrations of a culture. In reality, his efforts and entrepreneurial pursuits helped enslave generations of both women and men.

“Pornography corrupts what God created for enjoyment within marriage and objectifies the gift of our sexuality. Despite all the outward appearances of lavish and luxurious fun and frivolity, his is a sad legacy of brokenness.”

Interestingly our radio program today deals with the topic of human sexuality. What a difference we see when we compare the beauty of God’s design with what the world offers. The good news is His beautiful plan for human sexuality is available to us all, no matter what’s in our past. I hope you’ll read on and learn a bit more about today’s Focus on the Family broadcast.

God has given married couples a wedding present.

Sex.

The Lord designed physical intimacy to be enjoyed by both husbands and wives. First Corinthians 7 tells us that sex is rooted in mutuality. Husbands are to be sensitive to their wives’ needs, and wives are to be sensitive to their husbands’ needs. Marriage is about serving one another, not demanding your own rights.

Sadly, we live in a broken world that undermines God’s sacred designs. Secular culture portrays sex as primarily for the man. The woman is merely a means to an end. That’s a dangerous belief for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the harm it inflicts on a relationship.

What is God’s design for sex in marriage?

The fact that so many couples can’t answer that question is a good reason to have appropriate conversations about it. The Church talks about spiritual intimacy because it affects marriage. We talk about emotional intimacy because it affects marriage. We’ll even talk about financial harmony because it affects marriage. Likewise, physical intimacy is crucial to the sanctity and harmony of marriage.

Joining us on our Focus on the Family Broadcast are Cliff and Joyce Penner for a biblical discussion about God’s design for sex in marriage. We’ve had conversations for men, but “Enjoying Physical Intimacy as a Woman” is tailored to help women clear up some of the mystery surrounding God’s heart for them in physical intimacy.

This program isn’t graphic, but it’s still not suitable for younger children, so please use your discretion and occupy your kids elsewhere, or else listen later online or on our free phone app. The Penners’ book, “Enjoy the Gift of Sexual Pleasure for Women,” will further equip wives to find enjoyment in their sexual experience with their husbands.
