How do you pray? Are you open and honest? Do you pour your heart out? Or do you submit to God’s will and wait?
Author Elisa Morgan believes, through the example of Jesus, that we can do both.
In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus modeled a truth to prayer that can set us free in our prayer lives. In one thought, Jesus both requested (“If you are willing, take this cup”) and relinquished (“Nevertheless, not my will”). He prayed with both honesty and abandon.
Jesus’ prayer is not a formula, but within it is an approach that connects us to God in an honest, authentic way, just as Jesus did in the garden when He wrestled with His Father about what lay ahead. He trusted God to pull Him through.
On our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Praying with Honest Abandon.” We’re airing a message from Elisa on prayer that we recorded last summer when she visited our campus and spoke to our staff. Listen on your local radio station, online, on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or on our free phone app.
Elisa shares her journey of walking through times of uncertainty by following a path of deeper fellowship with our Father through His gift of prayer. She offers suggestions on how to pray your honest thoughts and feelings as well as encouragement for abandoning yourself to God.
