How do kids grow up with a healthy sense of their own worth? There are a lot of ways for them to learn, from team sports and a good youth group to artistic ability and academic achievements. The best way of all is the influence of a loving mom and dad in everyday moments of life.
A colleague once told me about the time he took his young daughter with him while he ran an errand to the store. When they got back into the car, she pulled a bar code sticker off one of the items they’d purchased and stuck it to her cheek. “Look, dad,” she said. “How much do you think I’m worth?” Her dad smiled and said, “Ah, honey … you’re priceless.”
I’m sure it won’t surprise you to know that all these years later that little girl – now a grown woman – remembers that moment well. It goes to show that teaching your kids how much they’re loved and valued doesn’t have to be complicated. You simply have to connect with your kids and take advantage of everyday opportunities.
