The Climb to Calvary – Part I

In observance of Holy Week, I have decided to use this space to offer a devotional series that I have prepared and which I have entitled:

THE CLIMB TO CALVARY

Meditations on The Seven Last Words of Christ

***

MONDAY:  The First Words

“Then said Jesus, ‘Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do.’ And they parted his raiment, and cast lots” (Luke 23:34).

In some ways, at least from a worldly perspective, these first recorded words spoken by Jesus on the cross are the most startling of all seven of His final statements captured in the Gospels.

Seemingly Divine Occurrences on Set of THE BIBLE

Karla Dial is our talented editor of Citizen Magazine. In this month’s issue she penned a wonderful profile piece on the History Channel’s epic miniseries The Bible. Since its debut on March 3rd, over 68 million people have tuned in to watch this magnificent dramatization of God’s Word. Many of them have been people curious about Christianity.  I hope they (and you!) will continue to watch this coming Sunday.

Because I’m so eager to encourage people to watch, I want to share with you a brief excerpt from Karla’s cover story in Citizen about the show.

VIDEO: Jesus Comes to the History Channel

“Jesus is coming!”

This weekend, on television, that is.

So says Roma Downey, the co-executive producer of History Channel’s The Bible. “He’s the ‘leading man’ of the Bible’s grand story of God’s love for us, and he makes his entrance this week.”

She sent me a clip earlier today of Sunday’s episode and I wanted to share it with you here:

Hope you all have a great weekend!

Reflecting Back on College

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of engaging with a group of college students from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. As I shared in my previous blog post, our time together led to spirited, honest dialogue that I was told later inspired some students to have meaningful conversations about Jesus and Christianity.

That evening brought back to mind my own time in college. As I shared with the young people at UCCS, although I was a Christian during my undergrad days, I spent long stretches of time reading my text books, but not reading my Bible.

Is the U.S. Doing Enough to Help Get this Pastor Out of Jail?

Pastor Saeed Abedini (photo courtesy of ACLJ) is a United States citizen currently serving an 8-year prison sentence in Iran. Reports indicate that he’s been repeatedly tortured and is at great risk of being killed.

His crime?

Telling people about Jesus during annual trips to the country.

The Iranian government has charged Pastor Saeed with “endangering national security” but the fact of the matter is that he’s helping underground churches as well as building orphanages for children.

Focus Featured in The New York Times

Saturday’s print edition of The New York Times featured an exclusive profile on Focus on the Family. You can access the piece by clicking here.

As I’ve shared countless times on the radio, I believe it’s our responsibility as Christians to be willing to go wherever the Lord leads us. For me this includes being willing to talk with anyone at any time about anything. It stems from my heart for evangelism and my desire to share the good news of the Gospel with those who do not know Him.

Do This NOW!

Do It Now

By Berton Braley

If with pleasure you are viewing
any work a man is doing,
If you like him or you love him,
tell him now;

Don’t withhold your approbation
till the parson makes oration
And he lies with snowy lilies on his brow;

No matter how you shout it
he won’t really care about it;
He won’t know how many teardrops you have shed;
If you think some praise is due him
now’s the time to slip it to him,
For he cannot read his tombstone when he’s dead.

The Bible Sets a Record

I received an email from Roma Downey and Mark Burnett yesterday about Sunday night’s premier of History Channel’s “The Bible,” which garnered nearly 15 million viewers.

Here’s what she wrote:

Number one on tv…Number one on history website…Number one on twitter. People all over our nation are talking about the Bible. People are talking about God , what a blessing that is…

It begins!

We are so grateful to you all for your love and encouragement and  prayers.

Hollywood Makes the Case for Teaching the Bible in Public School

The following essay was penned for The Wall Street Journal by our friends, Roma Downey and Mark Burnett.

As a friend of mine wrote on Facebook this morning, “All thoughtful, no thumping.”

But what do you think?

Why Public Schools Should Teach the Bible

Westerners cannot be considered literate without a basic knowledge of this foundational text.

5 Faith-Building Apps for Children

Like it or not, our kids are growing up in a world of gadgets and gizmos. Before they can even walk, many little ones know how to turn the page on an iPad or even open up a favorite app on a smart phone.

Navigating technology can be challenging enough for adults, but many parents contact us wanting to know how much screen time is safe for their kids. Should Junior be allowed to use the iPad?
