Talking to Your Kids About Sexuality and Gender

If you’re the parent of young children, maybe you’ll relate to this scenario.

Amy Davison’s children were watching a cartoon about a girl who had a crush on one of her classmates. Throughout the episode, she put love notes in the classmate’s locker. At the end, when the show revealed that the locker belonged to another girl, Amy’s ten-year-old daughter turned and asked, “Wait, what just happened? Does she like girls?”

And just like that, Amy was forced to have a conversation with her young child about the LGBT world.

How would you handle that moment?

Amy Davison and Hillary Ferrer are offering suggestions on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Talking to Your Kids About Sexuality and Gender.”

Hillary is the founder of Mama Bear Apologetics, which provides accessible apologetic resources for busy moms. Amy Davison holds a master’s in Apologetics from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Together they’ve written the book Mama Bear Apologetics Guide to Sexuality: Empowering Your Kids to Understand and Live Out God’s Design, which guides parents in helping their children navigate sexuality by arming them with the truth of God’s Word.

They guide Christian parents in how to have conversations with their children regarding LGBT issues and God’s design for sexuality. Their approach balances grace and truth in ways that point others to Christ.

Our conversation covers these and other topics:

  • Obsession with sex. The culture’s view of sexuality. The biblical view of sexuality. Why sex should be handled like fire.
  • When birds identify as bees. The trend of gender identity. The reality of gender dysphoria. How to help your child have truthful and grace-filled discussions among their peers.
  • The problem with pornography. The prevalence of pornography. How to guide your children when they see porn, not if.
  • How then should we respond? How to approach these subjects as Jesus would.

This program isn’t graphic, but it’s probably not suitable for younger children, so please use your discretion and occupy your kids elsewhere, or listen later on your local radio station, online, on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, via Google Podcasts, or take us with you on our free phone app for a healing conversation about your marriage.

Hillary Ferrer and Amy Davison’s book Mama Bear Apologetics Guide to Sexuality: Empowering Your Kids to Understand and Live Out God’s Design is available for a gift of any amount. For more information, click here or call 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).
