Dr. Jerome Adams is the United States Surgeon General and our special guest on today’s Focus on the Family Broadcast.
You’ve undoubtedly seen the Surgeon General in the news these last few weeks, often providing timely updates at the daily White House briefings on the coronavirus.
Dr. Adams is an eminently qualified physician with an extensive resume, but he’s also a man of deep Christian faith.
At one point on the program, the doctor quotes 1 Peter 5:7: “Cast your anxiety on Him for He cares for you.”
He then went on to say that God is at work in the midst of this crisis.
“People are anxious,” Dr. Adams acknowledged. “They need to know that there is a larger plan, a Higher Power at work and amidst all of this tragedy there are some tremendous opportunities to come together with your family, to love more deeply, to – to do things that we haven’t made time to do in the past, and my hope is that we’ll be able to salvage some good out of this time that we’ve been given while we also work to minimize the harm and the tragedy that comes out of this.”
In addition to discussing practical safeguards, like social distancing and washing hands, the nation’s top doctor addressed the recent attacks on evangelicals, with some liberal commentators even blaming people of faith for enabling and causing the virus to spread.
Can a Christian also believe in science? It’s such a ridiculous question, but I gave Dr. Adams a chance to respond.
“I’m a Christian and I am a scientist and from my perspective it’s hard to look at all the glory of our planet and our universe and not believe that there is a Higher Power out there,” he told me.
Of course, I wholeheartedly agree. Dr. Adams went on to elaborate:
“I think it’s important for people to know that those two things aren’t mutually exclusive and I think at a time like this it is all the more important that we understand the importance of faith and understand that there is a Higher Power guiding our pathway and that we will get through this on the other side if we come together. So, I just want folks to understand that it’s important to lean on your faith right now and that we will get through this and that there is no disconnect between being a Christian and being a scientist or a doctor or a believer in medicine.”
I hope you’ll tune into the full program. Be in prayer but also be confident that our country has highly qualified and incredibly talented men and women working around the clock to tackle this global pandemic.
Please be in prayer for Dr. Adams and the entire team working on our behalf.
