Pain has been called “the gift that no one wants.” And with good reason. Pain is a very real part of life – for all of us.
Many of you know my story. My mom died when I was nine years old. My stepdad abandoned me and my siblings within hours of her funeral. A few years later, my biological father died of alcoholism, and I spent several years in foster care. I got through it all mainly because of Christians like my football coach, who inspired me to turn to Christ and walk a path of hope and healing.
Through that journey, I’ve become a “wounded healer.” That is, as a result of my own suffering, I feel empathy for others in their suffering and am passionate about helping them discover how the Lord can redeem their story out of a painful circumstance.
Stephen Arterburn is a wounded healer as well. He’s our guest on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Walking Through the Healing Process.” Steve is founder and chairman of New Life Ministries, a national faith-based broadcast, counseling, and treatment ministry. He’s also a popular speaker and best-selling author.
Much of his passion for helping others has been born from his own pain. He has shared openly about paying for an abortion in college, struggling through infertility, and suffering the pain of divorce. Steve’s transparency has opened the door for thousands of people to find healing for their own pain.
Suffering people need someone who is unafraid to sit with them in their dark experiences and to feel the misery of what they’re going through. Steve shares practical wisdom that will help you embrace your pain and overcome it.
