Remember Goliath? In 1 Samuel, he taunted the Israelites, saying, “Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us” (v.9).
Author Deborah Pegues encourages her readers to imagine their fear as a giant like Goliath. If you overcome it, if you conquer it, your fear will serve you.
One of the most frequent commands in the Bible is to “fear not.” Second Timothy 1:7 says, “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” We all may face moments of fear, but God doesn’t want us to be consumed by it.
Fear is anticipating a loss or dreading that something bad will happen. Sometimes our fears are rooted in reality, sometimes they’re not. Either way, we can learn how to move through our fear rather than live in bondage to it.
How do you turn fear into an ally? Deborah Pegues is with us on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Calming Your Fears” to share biblical and practical ideas to address our core fears:
- Fear of death.
- Fear of inadequacy.
- Fear of loneliness (which includes the fear of rejection).
- Fear of losing control.
- Fear of change.
- Fear of failure.
