A homosexual activist once asked me, “When are Christians going to leave behind their medieval beliefs about sexuality and come into the 21st century?”
He was referring to the Bible, of course – which confronts all of us with some pretty powerful ideas that are not always easily digestible.
So, I responded, “Christians are followers of the Bible, not editors. We’re compelled to follow God’s Word because it’s His truth, and we believe Jesus when He says the truth sets us free” (John 8:32).
And what does the Bible say about homosexuality? The same thing it says about all the struggles we encounter in our fallen state. Second Corinthians 5:17 says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come” (5:17).
The Bible also says, “But sexual immorality and all impurity or covetousness must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints” (Ephesians 5:3).
The culture treats people’s race with respect because ethnicity is a sacred gift. Yet, the culture desacralizes sexuality. The Bible describes sexuality as a sacred gift from God, which is why Christians believe that any departure from the sacred expression of sexual love anchored in the Bible conflicts with God’s will for us. This includes heterosexual sin as well.
Jackie Hill Perry, our guest on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Discovering the Truth About My Identity,” offers a relational perspective. Abandoned and abused by the most important men in her life, she began seeking comfort in the love of women. But God was pursuing her all along.
Jackie’s testimony is a guide for the rest of us on how to really love our neighbors, and how to speak to them in ways that don’t condemn but points them to the hope and truth found in Jesus.
Jackie told me:
“It would have been helpful for me if Christians had actually told me about Jesus when they shared the Gospel with me. Instead, they told me to repent because I was going to hell. They were eager to condemn me, but not to tell me about the beauty of God. Telling a person with same-sex desires not to give in to those desires, to crucify them, to take up their cross daily and follow Jesus makes no sense until they have been persuaded that Jesus is worth following and that He has the power to help and to transform.”
Tune in for Jackie’s powerful story of transformation, from living openly as a lesbian to finding peace and purpose in Jesus Christ. This program isn’t graphic, but it’s probably not suitable for younger children, so please use your discretion and occupy your kids elsewhere, or listen later on your local radio station, online, on Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or on our free phone app. This was one of our most popular broadcasts of 2020.
If you’re struggling with same-sex attraction, reach out to us here at Focus. We have caring Christian counselors who are well-versed in helping people navigate this issue.
