There are two reactions to change:
1. Excitement.
2. Struggle.
Most of us understand that change can be good for us, but we still experience mixed feelings. We want to improve ourselves, but we struggle to let go of what used to be. Even positive changes, like a new job or upgrading to a larger home can stir up sadness over what we’re leaving behind.
Change is a complicated and unavoidable part of life for adults. It’s even more complicated and difficult for children.
Which raises a good question: what can you do to guide your child through change with patience, understanding, and reassurance?
Darby Strickland answers that question on Focus on the Family with Jim Daly. She shares how to be present for your children and help them stay steady when everything else in life is changing around them, and offers simple ways to:
• Walk alongside your child during times of transition.
• Comfort your children.
• Assure your children that God will be with them through every change.
• Embrace change together as a family.
Your children can learn that they don’t have to carry their burdens alone. They can see God as an unchanging source of hope and trust, see His love is sufficient, and embrace His invitation to bring our fears and grief to Him: “Fear not, for I am with you” (Isaiah 41:10).
