In January 1990, Duane became sick with influenza. He spent 10 days in bed with his throat swollen shut as if someone was squeezing his windpipe. Medication helped, but for three years, Duane could only whisper. His condition was so rare, he was examined by over 200 physicians from all over the world.

Because he couldn’t speak, he was forced to retire as a senior pastor. He was hired as a private investigator but later let go because his voice could harm the company if a case went to trial. Then, his insurance company deemed his treatment experimental and refused to pay the $18,000 bill. His disability company then dropped him. At rock bottom, Duane sat for hours with a 12-gauge shotgun, considering suicide.

One morning, he taught a Sunday School class at his church, even though he didn’t want to. He felt emotionally and spiritually bankrupt and only went through with it because he felt obligated, after agreeing to fill in as a substitute. He had to speak into a headset mic to be heard. The pre-selected curriculum that day was on Psalm 103. As he spoke, the unexpected happened.
