We’re all running as fast as we can. Mostly by choice. It’s hard to slow down when society rewards us for being on the go all day, every day. It’s also hard to work full time, build a strong marriage, and raise a family. Some days it’s all we can do to keep up with life’s demands.
The problem isn’t just busy schedules, it’s busy hearts and minds as well. We’re so anxious and stressed out that we’re less likely to notice the fragrance of a flower, the joy of a child’s laughter, or the soul of our spouse. A hectic pace is good for our bank account, but not for our family’s well-being.
A season of busyness is one thing, but it’s no way to live.
On a recent episode of Focus on the Family with Jim Daly, I talked with author Jessica Smartt about how to create a home marked by each fruit of the Spirit detailed by Paul in Galatians.
To do that, she suggests developing tiny habits that break bigger goals into manageable ones. Find ways to create small victories for yourself every day, every week, every month. If you’re on a diet, have a small cheat meal. If you’re striving to pay off debt, enjoy a special dinner after each bill you retire. If you’re building a stronger family, celebrate every day that you take another step toward deeper, more connected relationships.
Ideally, home is a place where you can:
• Go when you don’t have the answer.
• Laugh through your tears.
• Rest when you’re physically, emotionally, or spiritually weary.
• Hunker down and find restoration when you’ve made mistakes.
Jessica says, “Your family doesn’t have to be perfect to be strong.”
