Jackhammer The Foundation

You won’t believe what I did the other day. I rented a jackhammer and used it to chip away the concrete foundation of my home. It was a lot of work, but I was determined to finish the job. When I did, about a third of my home was perched atop a large, gaping hole.

I didn’t chisel away the foundation as part of a home improvement project. I wasn’t making way for a new addition. I just decided that that particular corner of the foundation wasn’t very important. There was living space above the hole, but so what? The rest of the foundation is still there, so I’m sure everything will be fine.

Okay, so I didn’t really take a jackhammer to my house like that. If anybody did, you and I would agree that they were crazy. That’s because we both understand that the foundation of a structure is the most critical part. It supports everything above it – including the people inside. Only a fool would destroy a third of what he depends on for his or her survival.

The same is true for our society. Our nation is built on a foundation of values. Values about family. Values about truth. Values about human worth and human dignity. They’re crucial to our culture’s well-being and survival.

Change is constant in culture. And I’m all for it when we harness it for our ultimate good and stability. But when we thoughtlessly redefine life, faith, marriage, and family, we’re taking a jackhammer to the foundation of our country that we depend on for survival.
