Mike Singletary is a great example of the word “overcomer.”
Although he is best known as a Hall of Fame linebacker who won a Super Bowl with the Chicago Bears, Mike’s challenges began before he was even born. His mother already had nine kids when she became pregnant with him, and she was struggling in a bad marriage. Her circumstances seemed so dire that some encouraged her to abort Mike.
Mike’s mother refused. Before he was born, she said to him, “Son, I want you to know that there’s greatness in you. Even though they’re telling me to abort you, I know that God has something special for you. You are going to be born. And you are going to do great things.”
Life didn’t get any easier for Mike after he was born. One of his older brothers died in a carbon monoxide accident. A few years after that, Mike’s parents divorced. Six months later, another of Mike’s older brothers died in an automobile accident.
It was Mike’s mother who again encouraged him forward. She told him, “Life will sucker-punch you. When you get kicked in the teeth, you’ve got to find a way to get up, dust yourself off, and get back in the ring. Just keep swinging, son, until one day you’re the only one left.”
Mike did. And for a brief moment, he was on top of the world. But he sank fast. The night his team won the Super Bowl, he couldn’t wait to get off the field and away from everyone to be alone. On the outside, everything was wonderful. On the inside, Mike was torn. He was struggling to find his way through his way through life’s pain while living a life that honored and glorified Jesus Christ.
How did he find hope?
