“My coach from my senior year could look at me and knight me with his eyes.”
That powerful comment illustrates the hunger of every boy to have a man, particularly a father, draw him into manhood. It comes from Dr. Robert Lewis, who has been associated with Focus on the Family for years. Back in the late 90s, he wrote a book with Focus called “Raising a Modern-Day Knight.” Since then, it’s been our number one best seller.
And with good reason. Raising boys to authentic manhood is more difficult than ever. Boys today are raised in what Dr. Lewis calls “dark manhood.” That’s a phrase based on dark matter in the universe – you know it’s there, but you can’t see it. With “dark manhood,” guys look like men outwardly, but they aren’t men inwardly.
Today’s boys aren’t being raised to be well-rounded men. Most of the activities we guide our boys toward build their exterior skills. Those are important to develop, but we overlook interior skills.
Character. Godliness. How to act with and toward women. How to understand themselves, and how to understand God. What does it mean to be a man? What are my responsibilities as a teenager, as a young man, and as successful, well-rounded adult?
A lot of dads don’t know how to bestow manhood upon their sons. We’re going to help you with that today on the Focus on the Family Broadcast “Raising Sons to Be Honorable Men.”
Dr. Robert Lewis will be our guest. We’ll be discussing his classic book and taking a fresh look at how fathers can shine their light on their boys’ “dark manhood.”
He’ll define what makes a man and offer practical applications for fathers and their sons to live out true, godly manhood.
He’ll also explain the 10 character qualities that Scripture highlights and that every father needs to transmit to his sons.
Dr. Robert Lewis is the founder of Men’s Fraternity, which is an organization teaching men of all ages how to live a life of authentic Biblical manhood.
