Best Way to Health, Wealth and Wisdom

For many, it’s the ever elusive dream:

Who doesn’t want to be fit, smart and have enough resources to make ends meet? It’s very often easier said than done.  But now, according to recently released census data, the quickest way to happiness is also the oldest way:

Get and stay married.

According to a Heritage Foundation report:

Intact families tend to fare better financially and marital satisfaction has been linked to better physical and emotional health.

Will the World End on Saturday?

By now you’ve picked up on the buzz that, according to Harold Camping of Family Radio, the rapture will occur this coming Saturday, May 21st. He’s even gone so far as to predict the exact time (6 PM), though there’s some confusion concerning time zones around the world.

So, May 21st, give or take a few hours.

This isn’t the first time that Mr. Camping predicted the Second Coming. He had previously proclaimed Jesus would return in September of 1994.

Two Stories About Prayer

On this, the 60th annual observance of the National Day of Prayer, I’d like to share two stories with you that accentuate and highlight the necessity of daily conversation with God.

Both of them involve little children, who are always some of life’s best teachers.

As little Deborah sat down to eat dinner with her parents she instinctively reached for her fork. “Please hold on,” her father replied. “We haven’t said grace yet.”  This exasperated the girl, who was tired and hungry.

The Confrontation of Evil

I hope you’ve been tuning into our three-day program with best-selling author, Eric Metaxas. We’ve been discussing his biography of Nazi resistance leader Dietrich Bonhoeffer, titled Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy.

Monday’s program is available by clicking here; Tuesday here and today, here. For now, I’d like to share with you a review of Eric’s book that was originally published in Citizen Magazine.

The Road to Freedom

Paul J. Batura

From beginning to end, the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer reads like something of an implausible if not impossible script:

A dashing young German genius receives his Ph.D.

The Bishop’s Sermon

The Bishop of London’s Sermon at the Royal Wedding

Westminster Abbey

29th April 2011

“Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”

So said St Catherine of Siena whose festival day it is today. Marriage is intended to be a way in which man and woman help each other to become what God meant each one to be, their deepest and truest selves.

Many are full of fear for the future of the prospects of our world but the message of the celebrations in this country and far beyond its shores is the right one – this is a joyful day!

What If the Church Shut Down?

As you know, the United States federal government narrowly avoided a shutdown on Friday night. The impact would have been significant. In fact, nearly half of the 1.9 million civilian government employees could have been furloughed by today, complicating or delaying everything from Social Security filings to a class field trip to a national park.

This situation is not without precedent and larger budget battles still loom. But all the drama and dire talk has made me think:

What if the Church shut down?

Tim Keller: Grace and Truth

As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, today and tomorrow’s Focus on the Family radio program features my conversation with Dr. Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian Church. I hope you’ll tune in by clicking here.

Tim is obviously a very gifted man on many levels, but I am especially appreciative of the graciousness by which he conducts his ministry. He is not just an intellectual, a theologian or a best-selling author, but also a Christian gentleman.

VIDEO: My Interview with Dr. Tim Keller

Newsweek magazine called Dr. Tim Keller a “C.S. Lewis for the twenty-first century.” I believe they’re correct. In addition to serving as the senior pastor of New York’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church, Dr. Keller is also a best-selling author of numerous books, including The Reason for God, The Prodigal God and Counterfeit Gods.

Tim has become a friend, and I recently had the privilege of visiting with him in New York City. Tomorrow and Friday’s Focus on the Family radio program will feature our discussion.

There is Something About the Irish

With a name like Daly and on a day like this, would you expect me to say anything less?

According to the books, the Dalys hail from the High King Tara (AD 380 to 405). In later years they were found all over Ireland, especially in the counties Clare, Cork and Galway. Today there are over 30,000 of us in Ireland alone.

If there is something about the Irish, there’s also something fun about St. Patrick’s Day.

The Political Illusion

As you may know, my family turned-off our television set a couple of years ago. It was a personal decision; we found ourselves wasting way too much time watching it and too little time talking together as a family. I wouldn’t presume to suggest that you do the same, or feel guilty if you don’t. All I can tell you is that it has done wonders for the cohesiveness of the Daly family.

Perhaps this decision is why I so quickly connected with a recent column from Chuck Colson.
