How to Criticize – And Not Be Hated For It

When was the last time you read Dale Carnegie’s classic, How to Win Friends and Influence People?  Although it’s sprinkled with time-dated illustrations, its core messages are timeless. For example, consider the following excerpt on how to correct a person without unduly offending them. As a husband and father, this lesson has broad reaching application:

Charles Schwab was passing through one of his steel mills one day at noon when he came across some of his employees smoking.

Tell Your Kids About This Man

Steffan Tubbs is a morning radio host on Denver’s leading talk station, KOA-AM. I enjoy listening to him along with his co-host, April Zesbaugh. They’re good at what they do.

Steffan has a tremendous appreciation for veterans, especially those who served in World War II. In fact, he’s the spokesman for The Greatest Generation Foundation, an organization dedicated to celebrating military personnel from that era. Steffan has accompanied many aging soldiers to former battlefields, including Pearl Harbor and Iwo Jima.

Five Things Every Great Leader Has in Common

It’s easy to find fault in others, to look out at the culture and identify individuals who, though in positions of great influence and responsibility, fail miserably as leaders. We see it in politicians who are more driven by popularity than by principle, who will seemingly do anything to remain in power. We see it in executives who preserve their own pensions at the expense of shareholders. We see it in the home, where mothers and fathers whittle away their precious few years of influence with their children.

Surprise!

I just returned to the office today from a wonderful week of vacation. Over lunch, after only a few hours back in the saddle, some of my kind teammates surprised me (literally) with a cake and a card in anticipation of my upcoming birthday on July 22nd.

Thoughts on the privilege of turning fifty to come…

It’s a Wonderful Life

It is probably one of the most endearing and iconic images of Christmas cinematic history. I can see it in my mind; so can you.

Here is teary-eyed George Bailey, played by the beloved Jimmy Stewart. He is exhausted but happy, standing with his family beside a Christmas tree amidst a horde of dear friends. One by one his pals come forward, sacrificially giving of their treasure to help him meet his debt.

I am reminded of this movie today in light of some exciting news that I’d like to share with you.

Greetings from San Diego!

I am in San Diego today but headed back to Colorado Springs. Dorothy was right: There is no place like home!

But is there time to make one final run to In-N-Out Burger?

It’s been a whirlwind trip. Before we head for home, I thought I’d share a few thoughts.

The latest installment of Focus on the Family’s Celebrate Family Tour went off without a hitch last night. Author Lysa TerKeurst joined us for a terrific discussion about her latest book, Am I Messing Up My Kids?

My Friend Bob

I want to tell you a story about a friend of mine. His name is Bob.

Bob and I have known each other for decades. Over the years, I’ve seen him get married and he’s seen Jean and me welcome our boys into the world.  We’ve laughed and prayed together and shared many ups and downs of life. He is one of those good friends where no matter how much time has passed between conversations, the talk always comes easy.

Dirt Roads

When was the last time you drove a dirt road?

Living out west in Colorado, just along the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, it’s not very hard to find one. The boys love it when we’re forced to venture off a paved street and find ourselves bouncing and navigating gravel and rocky paths. I have to admit, it’s kind of fun, so long as we don’t bust a hole in the gas tank, crack a windshield or blow the shocks or struts on the car.

Until We Meet Again

My good friend and colleague, Bart Phillips, died last Thursday night. He was buried yesterday under a warm and cloudless Colorado summer sky. At just 41 years-old, Bart was in love with life. As husband to Suzi and father to three boys, ages 12, 9 and 8, he had a lot for which to be grateful.

His personal email even reflected one of his great passions; bringingupboys@_______.

When word came to me that Bart had collapsed inside his home on Thursday night and had been rushed to the ER, I joined several of Bart’s other close friends from Focus at the local hospital to pray.

I Can Only Imagine

I never met Jack Wilson.

Jack’s the friend of a friend. I’m told he was a master staircase builder by trade, the father of two sons and, for 33 years, the faithful husband of his college sweetheart, Becky. That’s Jack on the right in a playful moment during a wedding back in September.

There’s a reason why I’m relaying this story to you which will be clear in a moment. But first, here’s what happened.

About three days before Thanksgiving, Jack felt extreme discomfort in his lower back.
