Yes, Churches are Essential

Donald Trump

Are houses of worship an “essential” part of American life? President Trump believes they are, and I couldn’t agree more.

Friday’s announcement from the White House that the Centers for Disease Control will be changing the COVID-19-inspired classification from “nonessential” to “essential” is long overdue. The president will also be calling on governors to allow churches, synagogues and mosques to open “right now.”

Thank you, Mr. President.

I’m not suggesting every church should swing open wide their doors, but as the rest of the country transitions back to a semblance of normalcy, they should have the right to make that determination for themselves.

Why Are Liquor Stores & Pot Shops Allowed to Open But Not Churches?

Church building

There is news out of Chicago that Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker will be imposing fines on three churches for meeting for worship services this past weekend.

According to the statewide stay-at-home order, churches are considered “nonessential.”

I understand that believers can worship everywhere, anywhere and at any time – but why are churches considered “nonessential” but liquor stores and pot shops deemed essential?

Illinois isn’t the first state to be so heavy handed and employ a double standard when dealing with people of faith.

President Trump Defends Life, Religious Liberty in His State of the Union Address

President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address last night to a joint session of Congress was a soaring defense of many of the core issues evangelical Christians care so deeply about.

From Mr. Trump’s defense of pre-born life, his conviction to uphold religious freedom and his ongoing commitment to appoint judges who promise to strictly interpret the Constitution, the president’s speech was sweeping in its socially conservative scope and emotionally moving on so many levels.

From NASCAR to New Orleans, ‘Bring Your Bible to School Day’ Momentum is Growing!

The late Dr. Adrian Rogers, who used to serve on the board here at Focus on the Family, liked to say that the Bible was like a pool shallow enough that a little child can come and get a drink without fear of drowning, yet so deep scholars can swim in it and never touch bottom.

I’m reminded of that observation as our promotion of ‘Bring Your Bible to School Day’ on October 3rd continues to heat up.  Here are just a few updates.

Celebrating the Bible in New Orleans

Did you happen to catch any of the Monday Night Football match-up between the New Orleans Saints and the Houston Texans?

A dramatic Drew Brees-led drive in the game’s final 37 seconds culminated with a clutch 58-yard field goal lifting the Big Easy’s favorite team to victory.

Although I’m a diehard Denver Broncos fan, I was inside the Louisiana Superdome rooting on the city’s home team.

Why?

I was there to express my support for Drew Brees and all the fans who had vowed to bring their Bibles to last night’s opening game.

Jack Phillips Continues to be a Modern Day Warrior for Religious Freedom

Jack Phillips continues to be in the news because those who disagree with him continue to harass the Colorado baker.

As you may recall, the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court announced it would hear Colorado baker Jack Phillips’ first case of alleged discrimination, Autumn Scardina called the Masterpiece Cakeshop and asked him to create a pink and blue cake to celebrate Scardina’s gender transition.

Like with the first case, Jack declined since it conflicted with his deeply held religious convictions.
