Our family is visiting Mt. Rushmore this 4th of July weekend. In the visitor center Tom Brokaw narrates a film about Gutzon Borglum, the sculptor who carved the four Presidents’ images—Washington, Jefferson, T. Roosevelt and Lincoln—into the granite. Brokaw says of those who worked on the mountain, “… these were ordinary men accomplishing extraordinary things.”
It made me think of our Christian faith. Yes, we are ordinary people accomplishing extraordinary things through Christ. In fact, this testimony came to us this week.
I was a regular listener of your show a long time ago and even used to listen to Adventures In Odyssey on road trips with my family as a kid. Now I’m an executive and have a family of my own but over these last few years have been struggling with my troubled childhood and just life challenges that have been beyond overwhelming…. I overcame sex addiction just over three years ago and have been sober from any of that but my marriage has never made a full recovery.
My wife and I are still together but are really just roommates with kids, and adding on extreme financial hardship with a toddler and one on the way I feel like I’ve come to the end of my rope as I feel I have failed on all fronts of my identity as a man, husband and father…. We have tried marriage counseling. I’ve gone through personal psychiatric counseling and nothing seems to work. Well … while I was driving to my failing job today I was so distraught that I was seriously contemplating suicide.
I saw a bridge where a friend of mine recently ended his life and I was beginning to entertain the idea when I got a draw to turn on the radio. Your program was on and Pastor Dave Lomas was talking about identifying myself as a child of God rather than on things the culture values, such as success, personality and appearance. I know that the Holy Spirit was at work here because that was exactly what I needed at that moment, and so I praise Jesus for that and for your program.
Thank you for what you do. Even though I am still barely hanging on I am hanging on to the hope of Christ rather than the hope of a noose…
Thank you for being a part of this effort to save lives, introduce people to our Savior Jesus Christ and help families to be strengthened.
