The Slow Burn of Romance

Ladies, how do you know when your marriage is romantic enough? Does your husband have to chase you to your gate at the airport? Does he have to throw rocks at your bedroom window and serenade you? How about a long kiss on the beach while waves tumble over you?

Guys, what about you? Do you imagine yourself as the hero, a valiant knight who sweeps your wife off her feet and carries her – literally and figuratively – into the future?

Romance can be a positive force in a couple’s relationship. Sharing beautiful moments together creates lasting memories and deepens emotional bonds with feelings of intimacy and love.

But romance is too weak to sustain a relationship … because romance fades. At some point after every fairy tale wedding, passion gives way to the daily grind of life. That’s why true romance isn’t a one-time flash of passion. It’s a slow burn, a day-by-day journey through the ups and downs of life.

My advice to married couples is this: pursue romance every chance you get. Why not take sunset walks on the beach, eat dinner by candlelight, or kiss in the rain? Enjoy beautiful moments together that lift your relationship beyond itself.

But give some thought to how you’ll build intimacy between those moments as well. Instead of your wedding day becoming the moment where your romance ended … see it as the moment where true romance was just getting started.
