Kyle Poulson was eight years old when he was told that he was adopted – a moment that became an anchor in his life. He felt blessed to grow up in a loving family with faithful Christian parents who wanted him.
Kyle’s adoptive father died in 1995. Before his adoptive mother passed away in 2016, she encouraged Kyle to find his birth mother, a process he began in February of 2017. Because the records were closed, he ran into dead end after dead end and thought he might never find his birth mother.
Decades earlier, his birth mother, Nina Hendee, believed that she might never see Kyle again. She was 16 years old in 1971 when she became pregnant. Reared in a strong Christian family, her parents encouraged her “not to cover a mistake with a tragedy” by having an abortion. And so, Nina chose life, giving her baby up for adoption.
The adoption process back then was harsh. When Nina went into labor, doctors hung a drape across her body to prevent her from seeing the child. And after the baby was born, he was immediately whisked away.
However, the day before Nina was released from the hospital, a nurse – against all the rules – sneaked Kyle into Nina’s room and placed him in her arms. For 20 minutes, she got to hold him, love him, and pray over him. It was their last moment together for nearly 50 years.
On our Focus on the Family Broadcast “How God Reunited a Birth Mom and Her Son,” Nina Hendee and Kyle Poulson are with us to share their remarkable story about how God orchestrated a reunion between them after 48 years.
Their journey is a profound reminder of how God answers prayer – even when we don’t know who or what people are praying for us. Listen on your local radio station, online, on Apple Podcasts, via Google Podcasts, or take us with you on our free phone app.
Nina and her husband, Edd, are the owners and operators of the Taste of Texas restaurant in Houston. Kyle Poulson is a commercial real estate advisor and investor for Trans Western in the Fort Worth, Texas area. He also serves as a board member and coach for a number of local organizations.
This program touches on a number of issues that may be tender for you. If so, I want you to know that Focus on the Family has a caring Christian team of counselors, and it would be their privilege to offer you a free consultation. Call us, leave your name and number, and they’ll get back with you just as soon as possible. The number during business hours is 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).
If you’d like to play a role in supporting life, one of the best things you can do is participate in our Option Ultrasound program. Abortion clinics are interested in abortion. Pregnancy resource centers minister to everyone involved: the woman, the man, the baby – the whole family.
Focus supports these centers through our Option Ultrasound program, which provides grants for sonogram training and technology. To date, more than 800 ultrasound machines have been placed around the country, and nearly 460,000 babies have been saved.
We’re working hard to raise that number to one million babies saved sometime in the near future. With that in mind, I’d like to extend an invitation for you to become a special partner with us through our monthly “Friends of Focus on the Family” program. What’s amazing is that it only takes $60 to save a baby’s life by providing ultrasound machines and additional resources.

Before I close, I want to mention Focus on the Family’s See Life 2021. Focus is combining the convenience of an online experience with the power of an in-person live event. This engaging pro-life initiative premiered across Focus on the Family’s websites and social media channels on Friday, July 16th. Each Friday, another episode of See Life 2021 is debuting, offering powerful testimonies from women and men whose lives have been impacted by abortion and practical information about the pro-life movement for families. Then, on Saturday, August 28th, See Life 2021 will culminate with a LIVE celebration of life at the American Airlines Arena in Dallas-Fort Worth. We’d love to see you there! -To preface this comment, I am pro-life. I do not believe that abortion should be an option. With that said, you should consider reading testimonies on the Facebook group, “ANTI-ADOPTION”.
