How God Reunited a Birth Mom and Her Son

Family

Kyle Poulson was eight years old when he was told that he was adopted – a moment that became an anchor in his life. He felt blessed to grow up in a loving family with faithful Christian parents who wanted him.

Kyle’s adoptive father died in 1995. Before his adoptive mother passed away in 2016, she encouraged Kyle to find his birth mother, a process he began in February of 2017. Because the records were closed, he ran into dead end after dead end and thought he might never find his birth mother.

Foster Care: How Everyone Can Help

What is the goal of foster care?

That’s a big question with a multi-faceted answer. We’re not all called to do the same thing, but we’re all capable of doing something. The ultimate goal is for every believer to feel empowered with a sense of calling and direction about their role.

“Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good” (1 Cor.

The Complicated, Beautiful Life of a Foster Mom

Foster mom with two kids

May is National Foster Care Awareness Month.

We’re honoring all those who have stepped into the world of adoption and foster care on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “The Complicated, Beautiful Life of a Foster Mom.” Our guest is Jessie Gallaher, who is with us to share her story, a difficult yet rewarding journey of adopting five children from foster care – all at once!

When Jessie and her husband first brought the kids home, a lot of people gave the same advice: “Just love them.

Thank you, President Trump & Vice President Pence for Your Ongoing Support of Adoption & Foster Care

As the broadcast team and I continue to make our way across the country this week (we’re in Tampa tonight!) as part of the Focus on the Family Live! tour, I followed with interest the National Adoption Month celebration taking place yesterday in Washington, D.C.

My colleague and friend Dr. Sharen Ford was in the audience for Vice President Pence’s eloquent and moving address in which he extolled the gift of adoption while highlighting the critical needs of too many children currently in our state’s foster care systems.

Boone and Me: A Foster Adoption Story

God’s grace and unconditional love are most often on display when the lives of two people intersect.

Such is the story of Cecil and Boone Stokes. Cecil is a successful television and film producer of over 500 shows. He had it all.

Well, there was one unfulfilled dream. At the age of 12 years old, God planted the desire in Cecil’s heart to be a father someday, specifically the father of an adopted son.

Years later, Boone was one of over 400,000 kids in the foster care system.

Adoption: Making a Difference in the Life of a Child

Can you open your heart to a child who needs a family?

If you answered no, you’re not alone. Many couples wrestle with whether or not they should adopt, or if there’s some other part they should play.

That was how Mike and Kristen Berry’s story began.

Kristen assumed she and Mike would adopt children when they married. Adoption was Kristen’s family legacy. Her grandfather and his brother grew up in the foster care system, but they were never adopted.

Why They Adopted a Child with Down Syndrome

Yesterday, March 21st, was World Down Syndrome Day, a day to raise global awareness about Down syndrome and to celebrate the vital role people with Down syndrome play in our lives and in our communities.

In recognition, our radio program is featuring the story of one couple who found God’s grace through adoption … in an unusual and remarkable way.

Heather and Josh Avis walked a long, difficult journey through infertility. “Why not us?” was their anguished question.

A Tale of Two Rallies

Several colleagues and I were in Washington D.C. last week for our Evangelicals for Life Conference along with the annual March for Life.

A few observations:

Last week’s massive March for Life rally on the Mall unfolded in familiar fashion. Just before noon, pro-life stalwarts from every state convened to stand in solidarity, many of them carrying signs declaring life as the better choice. It was the 45th consecutive gathering and the longest-running demonstration of its kind.

Practical Help for Adoptive Parents

If I handed a baby to you, the infant would likely snuggle face first into your shoulder for comfort.

That’s not how it was with my colleague John Fuller’s youngest son. They adopted him when he was nine months old. Even as a baby, he would physically turn away when he was held. He’d accept chest-to-chest and back-to-chest snuggles, but never face-to-face.

That’s how deep attachment issues in adopted children can run. Many children who have lost their parents in some fashion suffer from a sense of rejection and lack of emotional connection that reaches to their soul.

Jim Daly on the Restoration of the Adoption Tax Credit

Husband, wife and adopted daughter

As one who grew up an orphan, I applaud the leadership of the House of Representatives and the Ways and Means Committee for the action taken today to restore the Adoption Tax Credit (ATC). Our friends and listeners responded to our calls to contact members of Congress and amend the initial proposal. In turn, our elected officials have heeded our plea.

The ATC is a vital tool supporting the life-affirming and life-saving act of adoption.  It is a crucial part of a pro-life and pro-family policy agenda.
