Author Rhonda Stoppe thought she was prepared to be a great mom … until she gave birth to her second child, a son. Rhonda felt inadequate to be his mother. Raising a daughter felt easy. Raising a son felt intimidating.
Many moms can relate. They understand how their daughters think, feel, and see the world. Not so their sons. My wife, Jean, did an amazing job of adapting to our two boys and creating a meaningful connection with both, but she worked hard it. She knows firsthand how challenging it can be for moms to connect with boys who think and act so differently from her.
With God’s leading, Rhonda began meeting several older and wiser women who fulfilled Paul’s exhortation in Titus 2:3-4: “Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children.”
These women offered Rhonda encouragement, godly parenting advice, and engaged her in Bible study through which she could filter her daily parenting experiences. Over time, Rhonda learned that success as a mom doesn’t depend on what her son did, but on her obedience to God.
Mom, you may have specific dreams about your son’s future, but God’s journey for your son may take a very different course than you expect, one that may not initially look like “success” to you or to others.
Will you humble yourself to the Lord’s will and purpose for your son’s life?
Rhonda Stoppe is with us on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “How Godly Moms Can Raise Godly Sons,” to equip Christian moms to raise their sons to become godly, healthy men. She shares parenting insights through the eyes of biblical mothers like:

- Jochebed, Moses’ mother.
- Rebekah, mother of Esau and Jacob.
- Salome, mother of James and John.
- Mary, Jesus’ mother.
