Jean and I have two boys, Trent and Troy. They’re in their 20s and on a good track through life. They’re active, so we don’t see them as often as we would like, but we stay in touch almost daily and have a good time when we’re together.
Unfortunately, that experience is not true of every parent with adult children. They disagree about lifestyle choices, job choices, dating choices, or faith choices. Even loving families experience tension when young adults and their parents don’t see eye to eye. And life only gets more complicated when the adult child lives under the parents’ roof.
How can everyone involved prevent disagreement from becoming disconnection in the relationship?
On Focus on the Family with Jim Daly, I’m talking with Dr. Gary Chapman about how you can create a healthy, engaging relationship with your adult child. We discussed a number of helpful ideas, including:
- Common parenting mistakes with adult children.
- Successful parenting strategies.
- What to do when your adult child is stuck.
- What to do when your empty nest isn’t so empty.
- Lifestyle issues, including cohabitation and homosexuality and gender confusion.
- Mending and reconciling your parent/child relationship.
- Creating a spiritual legacy for your family.
