Before Greta Eskridge had children, she was a high school teacher. She was confronted by the pervasiveness of pornography when she discovered that one of her ninth-grade male students had a sexually explicit photo in his binder.
Greta asked the student not to bring material like that to her class again, and then she explained how objectifying, disrespectful, and demeaning pornography is to women. She still remembers the look of confusion that came over the student’s face. He told her that no one had ever explained pornography to him in those terms.
That experience made a profound impact on Greta. She wondered, “How will I protect my future children from the dangers of porn?”
Years later, when Greta became a parent, she attempted to “porn proof” her children – to prevent them from seeing inappropriate material at all. She soon realized that bubble wrapping her children was not only impossible, it was a parenting strategy born out of fear rather than trust and hope in God.
Greta Eskridge is joining me on Focus on the Family with Jim Daly to help parents discuss pornography and God’s design for healthy sexuality with their children.
She shares how to:
- Have a hundred little conversations instead of one big one.
- Make a “Porn Plan.”
- Develop trust in God.
- Pursue connection.
- Discuss “sexting” and “sextortion.”
- Protect your children’s minds.
Keeping pornography in the dark gives our enemy power over us. Focus on the Family exists to offer resources that will help you thrive in Christ, despite the darkness of our world. Let us enter this part of the parenting journey with you and help you navigate these discussions with confidence, courage, and wisdom.
This program isn’t graphic, but it’s probably not suitable for younger children, so please use your discretion and occupy your kids elsewhere, or listen later on your local radio station, online, on Apple Podcasts, or take us with you on our free phone app.
Before I close, I’d like to extend an invitation for you to become a special partner with us through our monthly “Friends of Focus on the Family” program. When you do, I’ll send you a copy of Greta Eskridge’s book It’s Time to Talk to Your Kids About Porn: A Parent’s Guide to Helping Children and Teens Develop Sexual Integrity as a way of saying thank you for touching others with the love of Christ. You’ll also receive member-exclusive benefits. To make your pledge, or for more information, click here or call 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).
