Loving the Spouse God Gave You

One of the most exciting programs at Focus on the Family is our Hope Restored marriage intensives. For couples struggling in marriage, even those on the brink of divorce, Hope Restored goes a long way toward facilitating healing and bringing restoration to a broken relationship.

Just one example is Sadie and Bill. Bill’s marriage betrayal was so significant that Sadie held out little hope that their relationship could be saved. During their intensive counseling, Bill embraced his need for change and dug in to his relationship with the Lord. Once home, he joined a men’s Bible study and used the tools he’d learned, determined to take responsibility for himself and be a different man.

Bill’s change was immediate, but it took Sadie nine months to believe that Bill’s changes were real, that they were going to stick. That realization empowered her to drop her defenses enough to look at her own pain and begin healing.

Dr. Tara Lalonde and Bob Paul, two of our counselors at Hope Restored, help couples make their marriages safe. Most couples think of safety in terms of physical safety which, of course, is extremely important. However, they broaden that view to include mentally, spiritually and emotionally as well. When couples feel safe in all those areas, they relax in their relationship. And when they relax, their hearts open, which gives the Lord access to influence change.
