If you haven’t already heard, in just a few days, Focus on the Family is officially re-launching Brio Magazine, our publication for teen girls. It’s a positive, godly alternative to most of the influences out there today for teenage girls.
Our “Brio girl” for the inaugural issue is Sadie Robertson. Many of you know her from the A&E reality show Duck Dynasty and from Dancing with the Stars a few seasons ago.
She’s just 19, but she’s an impressive young lady, and we’ve asked her to join us in the studio today to share how she is fearlessly living out her faith and using her public platform to be an excellent role model for girls.
Like many young girls, Sadie once tried to find confidence in herself through her own abilities. But she’s learned how to be confident in who God is through her. Several years ago she wrote Hebrews 10:35-36 on a dry-erase board in her bedroom: “Therefore, do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward … so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised” (ESV). That verse became a strong foundation for her barely a year later when the fame and pressure that came with the Duck Dynasty program began.
Sadie believes every teenage girl can discover her unique, original self in Christ, something Sadie has been raised to believe about herself since she was little. In fact, her dad nicknamed her “The Original.” That came about when she was five years old and gathered her parents in the living room to preach to them about God’s love. After one of her “sermons,” her dad hugged her and encouraged her to always be her true, original self.
“Sadie,” he said, “you have a unique way of communicating. Use it for the Lord.”
Ever since, she’s had a strong passion to speak about Christ. She even prayed early on for God to give her the opportunity to share about Him with somebody, anybody. She had no idea those prayers would one day give her an audience of millions.
I hope you’ll gather with your teen daughters around your radio, or listen online, or on our free phone app and hear what Sadie has to say about “Living with Authenticity.” She knows as much as any teen girl about the pressures of dating and social media, and the challenge of staying committed to Christ in a world increasingly against Christian beliefs and values. She also has some great stories every mom and dad will find helpful about how her parents, Willie and Korie Robertson, have connected with her and supported her along the way.
Sadie is the author of the New York Times best-selling book, Live Original: How the Duck Commander Teen Keeps It Real and Stays True to Her Values. That and other helpful teen resources are available in our online bookstore.
