A Story of Billy Graham and Ronald Reagan

At the time Dr. Billy Graham and Ronald Reagan first met in 1953, both men were rising stars, one in the pulpit and the other in a pseudo-political role.

Mr. Reagan was on the verge of signing a lucrative deal as a corporate spokesman for General Electric, a move that would not only earn him a good living but also put him in everyone’s living room for the next eight years.

Still, Dr. Graham’s future appeared even brighter.

Look at What God Has Done!

It’s always exciting to review events of the past year.

That’s because it’s only when you step back do you often fully appreciate all that the Lord has been doing in your life.

Just over the stairs in our main building here in Colorado Springs hangs a wonderful verse of Scripture:

“…and all the people were very happy because of what God had accomplished so quickly” (2 Chronicles 29:36, T.L.B.).

I love that verse.  It also accurately sums up the year 2012 here at Focus on the Family.

The Ultimate Christmas Verse

It struck me the other day and in the process of thinking about it, left a pit in my stomach.

As I prayed about the ongoing heartache surrounding the school shooting in Connecticut, I thought about the fact that many of the children who appeared in Focus on the Family’s “John 3:16” advertisement that aired earlier this year are the same age as many of the victims at Sandy Hook Elementary School.   We all love the sweetness and innocence of children and just can’t fathom any person deliberately harming one of them.

Evil in Connecticut

Their stories will be told in the coming days, snapshots of innocence lost and lives cut short by the unspeakable and incomprehensible evil at the hands of another human being.  We’re saddened and shocked, as well we should be. There is no parent in America who isn’t knocked over by the tragic news of the horrific elementary school shooting in Newton, Connecticut.

We want to cry. We want to scream. We want to hug our children tighter than we ever have before.

Family Never Left Side of Coma Victim for 42 Years

From NBC News…a story of true love:

A woman who lived in a coma for 42 years, meticulously cared for by her family, died Wednesday in her home in Miami Gardens, Fla., the Miami Herald reported.

Edwarda O’Bara was a 16-year-old high school student in 1970 when she became sick from her diabetes medication and slipped into a diabetic coma.

According to the Herald, just before she lost consciousness, Edwarda asked her mother, Kaye O’Bara, to never leave her side, and her family never did.

The Wisdom of Zig Ziglar

I was saddened yesterday to learn of the death of Zig Ziglar, a bestselling author and motivational speaker. He was 86.  Zig inspired us and lifted our spirits by lifting up the name of Jesus. He reminded us to believe in ourselves only because Christ first believed in us.

Here are a few favorite quotes from over the years from the tongue and pen of Zig Ziglar:

Make every effort to be perceived as the most capable, not the most visible.

The Real Lesson Behind the General Petraeus Affair

Retired General and now-former CIA Director David Petraeus was originally scheduled to testify today before Congress to answer questions about the deadly terrorist attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya.

Instead, the man some believed a likely candidate for President, is reeling from his admission of an extra-marital affair and subsequent resignation from the Central Intelligence Agency. The scandal is continuing to unfold and expand, almost hour by hour.

Even with so many details still unanswered, it’s a sad and sordid story, an example of how quickly a person’s life and reputation can be marred by moral indiscretion.

Why this School is O.K. with a Man Exposing Himself to Young Girls

Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, is allowing a 45-year-old man to use the school’s women’s locker room. He’s been reportedly spotted by young girls sitting exposed in the sauna.

How could this be true?

The man is said to believe he’s a woman. He goes by “Colleen” and is a student at the school. The locker room is used by several swim teams and local clubs – clubs that have young girls on their respective squads.

NYC Mayor Bans Food Donations?

When I first heard the news, I assumed it couldn’t be true, that it was just another email hoax along the lines of the generous Nigerian benefactor who wants to wire me $5,000,000.

But then I read the story from CBS News:

“Glenn Richter arrived at a West Side synagogue on Monday to collect surplus bagels — fresh nutritious bagels — to donate to the poor. However, under a new edict from Bloomberg’s food police he can no longer donate the food to city homeless shelters.

Campaign 2012: My Predictions

Millions of Americans have already voted this year, but tens of millions more will cast their votes tomorrow. Will you be among them? I hope so.

Are you getting anxious as the polls swing back and forth and the pundits prognosticate?

The curtain is falling on arguably the most contentious and expensive election in American history. We’ve all been living through history – and phone calls, advertisements – and more advertisements.

Is there anything else that we can do?
