As Seen in The Washington Post

As many of you know, I am honored to serve as a panelist on the Washington Post’s On Faith blog.  I thought I would share this week’s contribution with you.

Here is the question that was posed to me:

The U.S. House of Representatives voted last week to eliminate federal funding for Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions, along with a variety of health care services for women. The Virginia General Assembly last week approved legislation that requires abortion clinics to be regulated as hospitals, and providers say the stricter regulations will force many of them out of business.

Two Questions the Abortion Industry Cannot Answer

Dr. Bernard Nathanson, the former atheist/abortionist who killed 60,000 babies before becoming one of the pro-life movement’s strongest advocates, was remembered today in a funeral mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. He was 84.

The former chief of obstetrics and gynecology for the Northeast Air Command of the Air Force, Dr. Nathanson credited his dramatic conversion from promoting death to preserving life to seeing a single picture, or more precisely, experiencing the wonder of ultrasound technology.

Is This Billboard Offensive?

Take a look at the picture of this billboard.

Do you find it offensive?

Not surprisingly, the Reverend Al Sharpton, a flashpoint figure and known agitator, does, saying it “demonizes women.” He demanded it be taken down. Planned Parenthood agreed, calling it a “condescending effort to stigmatize and shame African-American women.”

The controversy surrounding the billboard created a predictable circus like atmosphere in New York, with Reverend Sharpton threatening a protest in front of the building.

Justin Bieber’s Scandal

Are any of your kids “Beliebers” – i.e. fans of singer Justin Bieber?

In pop music circles, Mr. Bieber is a big deal. An overnight sensation whose music was first posted online, the sixteen year-old also has a new movie out. Opening two weeks ago, the film has already grossed nearly $50 million.

But according to the New York Times art critic Jon Caramanica, Mr. Bieber has big-time trouble brewing.

A scandal? Drugs? Sex? A family feud?

My Least Favorite and Most Important Broadcast

In the year since assuming my role as host of our radio program, I’ve always looked forward to my time in the studio with my colleagues, Juli and John.

That is until today.

Today’s program, “The Value of Standing for Life,” is probably the most difficult and least enjoyable one I’ve ever recorded. But, candidly, it may be the most important one, too.

Our broadcast today is about life and death. It’s about, among other things, the abortionist Dr.

Planned Parenthood Stung by Sting Operation

Everybody knows Planned Parenthood promotes and encourages abortion. But sex trafficking?

It is a convoluted and sad story:

Amy Woodruff, the clinic manager of a New Jersey Planned Parenthood office has been fired for aiding and abetting two people who posed as sex trafficking workers.

The undercover operation was organized by Lila Rose of Live Action, a youth-led movement dedicated to building a culture of life and ending abortion. Ms. Rose, a student at UCLA, founded Live Action in 2006.

Saved on a Sidewalk

Our broadcast with former Planned Parenthood employee Abby Johnson has resulted in many emotional phone calls, letters and emails to us here at Focus on the Family. (To listen to the entire two-day program, please click here.) Abby’s story is a beautiful picture of what redemption from sin can look like for those who repent, believe and put their faith in Jesus Christ.

One listener, Sandra, wrote with a beautiful testimony of what can happen when a pro-life advocate puts their faith into action.

Philadelphia Grief

When a tape of an Oval Office conversation from January 23, 1973, was released in 2009, many were surprised that President Nixon expressed ambivalence when talking about the Supreme Court’s decision the day before that legalized abortion.

The White House issued no statement on the day Roe v. Wade was decided. On the tapes, Nixon expressed concern that broader access to abortion would foster “permissiveness” and that it “breaks the family.” Yet, he also said he saw reasons why it might be necessary, such as – shockingly and offensively – in cases of interracial pregnancies.

Are Babies Better than Abortion?

Writing in today’s Wall Street Journal, William McGurn asks a serious question:

Are babies better than abortion?

Mr. McGurn is responding to a sobering new study recently released from the Chiaroscuro Foundation, a private nonprofit organization. He writes:

After crunching the latest statistics from New York City’s Health Department, the foundation reported that 41% of pregnancies (excluding miscarriage) in New York ended in abortion. That’s double the national rate.

As a society, does this figure say anything about the choice between a baby and abortion?
