Walking with God Through Trials

We all think we have strong faith. Until our world gets rocked.

An adverse diagnosis.

A child who loses their way.

A divorce.

The storms of life leave us shaken, wondering if God is really there.

Psalm 34:18 assures us that He is: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.”

What a comfort that is!

God’s presence has anchored author Michelle Cushatt’s life through the upheaval of many trials and difficulties. Her first marriage ended in divorce, leaving her a single mom with a young son. Then, while she and her second husband struggled to overcome the challenges of a new stepfamily, they adopted three traumatized children from her extended family. It was also during this season of life that she was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue – three times.

Yet, through all of this, Michelle says Jesus proved faithful. She’s sharing her story on our Focus on the Family Broadcast “Walking with God Through Trials” to explain ten spiritual practices that will help deepen your faith enough to sustain you through life’s storms:

  1. Lament.
  2. Worship.
  3. Humility.
  4. Relinquishment.
  5. Contentment.
  6. Shalom.
  7. Forgiveness.
  8. Perspective.
  9. Connection.
  10. Waiting.

Hear my and Michelle’s full conversation about these spiritual practices on your local radio station, online, on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, via Google Podcasts, or take us with you on our free phone app.

In the meantime, if you’re not sure where to start on the journey of faith, you may be interested in a free online booklet we’ve written called, “Coming Home: An Invitation to Join God’s Family,” which explains what it means to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

And if you’re grasping at the fringes of a faith that has faded, we have a terrific team of Christian counselors who will listen, pray with you, and direct you toward healing and hope. Call us, leave your name and number, and they’ll get back to you as soon as possible. The number during business hours is 1-800-A-FAMILY (232-6459).

Before I close, I’d like to extend an invitation for you to become a special partner with us through our monthly “Friends of Focus on the Family” program. When you do, I’ll send you a copy of Michele Cushatt’s book A Faith That Will Not Fail: 10 Practices to Build Up Your Faith When Your World Is Falling Apart as a way of saying thank you for touching others with the love of Christ. You’ll also receive member-exclusive benefits. To make your pledge, or for more information, click here.
